It is with great sadness that we lost Professor WANG Ningsheng on February 1, 2014. Prof. Wang was a graduate from Beijing University, and soon moved to Yunnan and spent the rest of his life.  

Prof. Wang was well known in China as an outstanding ethnologies and archaeologist for his pioneering research in ethnoarchaeology, history and cultures of ethnic minorities in Southwest China; he discovered the ancient rock paintings of the Wa (Lawa) people in Cangyuan in 1965.

Prof. Wang also impressed his colleagues and students for his commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and serious holds on to academic principles (honest scholarship) that has been of exceptional value in China.  

He published both in Chinese and in English, his works in English includes:

Wang, Ningsheng（2010）：Changes in Ethnic Identity Among Han Immigrants in the Wa Hills from the Seventeenth to Nineteenth Centuries. Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology 11.2: 128-41.

Wang, Ningsheng（1989）：Ancient ethnic groups as represented on bronzes from Yunnan, China. pp.195-206 in Stephen Shennan, ed. Archaeological Approaches to Cultural Identity. London: Unwin Hyman.

In recent years, he continued to work as chief editor of a serious ethnological journal (the Minzu Xuekan), which is well acknowledged among serious researchers for its academic merit in China.

I sincerely hope that his humility to knowledge, his compassion for research and his honesty in scholarship will continue to inspire scholars to pursue for the truth in knowledge.
